Game to film adaptations aren’t known to be the best type of movies, as seen in the extremely inaccurate ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ film in 2015 that left fans brokenhearted and disappointed, and don’t even let me get started with the cringe worthy ‘Mortal Kombat’ series. Though almost all of game to movie adaptations are crap, there are some exceptions that made it big and got praise from the fans of the series, such as Angelina Jolie’s original ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ film.
Needless to say, game to movie adaptations are mostly horrid and inaccurate to the source material, this is the reason why they infuriate the fans of the games so much, but have hope, there is an upcoming film that fans have been looking forward to for the past 4 years, the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ movie.
Assassin’s Creed is a well known series of games that base on real life events in the past such as the Renaissance, the Third Crusade and the Coloniel era and adding some other elements into it. The story follows the conflict between the ‘Assassins’, who fight for peace and freedom, and the ‘Templars’ who also fight for peace but through force and control. The main concept of the games is that you are from the present, and you go into the ‘Animus’, which is a machine that lets you experience the memories of your ancestors, to find information on certain artifacts and crucial memories.
On 22nd October, 2012, Ubisoft announced that they will be making an Assassin’s Creed movie, the majority of the fan base really liked the idea of it, but the movie, which was just announced, received a lot of negative opinions on it because the current state of game to movie adaptations. As time went on, more information got leaked and fans were rather pleased with the progress Ubisoft has been working on for the past couple of years. It is revealed that Michael Fassbender is going to be playing the lead role of ‘Calum Lynch’ and ‘Aguilar’, both brand new characters never seen before in the games.
The movie is set to be released on the 21st of December this year, and production has already started, a trailer came out really recently and you can watch it here. Just like the games, the movie is going to be set both in the present and the past, this time we are going to be exploring 15th century Spain, though it has been revealed on an interview on IGN that only 35% of the movie is set in the Animus, so we will be seeing 15th century Spain for only a short time, and mostly in the present. This made fans outraged because the franchise is know for its amazing scenery and accuracy of detail of the past, so having the main focus of the story on the present didn’t leave fans happy at all. Though there is a varied cast with famous movie stars like ‘Michael Fassbender’ and ‘Brendon Gleeson’, and a budget of over 150 million dollars, don’t let that fool you because this is a game to film adaptation and we all know how most of them end up, one tiny step into the wrong direction can make the movie flop and disappoint all the fans, so Ubisoft is taking a big risk here. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
