Chart Korbjitti is a Thai writer famous for his novel Khamphiphaksa (The Judgment), which was published in 1981, and received an S.E.A Write Award. His other well-known books include Pan Ma Baa (The Mad Dogs) and Wela (Time). Khamphiphaksa ’s popularity rose from the novel’s language, which dominates most Thai works.
On May 4th, the Grade 11 students (CO’19) and students from Regent’s and Wells International School had the opportunity to attend Chart Korbjitti’s interview event here at KIS. The students listened to the author’s voice and thoughts about his novel, with most of the discussion being about Khamphiphaksa, which eventually became the main topic of the interview.
With a Thai social context, this novel is a story about a young man named ‘Fak’ who was criticized and judged by the people of his own small rural community ever since his father passed away. His father’s stepmother, a woman named ‘Somsong’, is rumored to be Fak’s wife. The abnormal relationship becomes a major scandal, but it’s all just a huge misunderstanding. It’s a psychological drama that clearly established Chart Korbjitti’s unique and naturalistic writing style.
Many students found the event to be an interesting experience, especially as the G11 students were able to meet the author of a novel that they read for their IB course(s). Korbjitti mentioned that his inspiration for writing this novel came from his own life experiences. He had once judged others in his society, so with Khamphiphaksa, the key message that he is hoping to deliver is: “We should never judge a person from the outside.”
After a Q&A session with students, the event ended with Korbjitti saying that Thai people should keep up with the news, so that they do not get easily exploited.

ชาติ กอบจิตติเป็นนักเขียนไทยชื่อดังที่คนไทยหลายๆ คนชื่นชมผลงานเขียนนิยายของเขา นิยายที่รับเป็นที่นิยมมากคือเรื่อง คำพิพากษา (พิมพ์เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๕) เเละได้รับรางวัลซีไรต์ นอกจากนี้ยังมี หนังสือ พันธุ์หมาบ้า (พิมพ์เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๖) เเละ เวลา (พิมพ์เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๔) จุดเด่นของนิยาย คำพิพากษา คือภาษาของคุณชาติที่บรรยายเเละพรรณนา เเสง สี และเสียงอย่างรอบคอบ หนังสือเล่มนี้จึงกลายเป็นวรรณกรรมไทยดีเด่น

เมื่อวันที่ ๔ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๑ นักเรียนเกรด ๑๑ ของโรงเรียนเรารวมทั้งโรงเรียนนานชาติรีเจนท์เเละโรงเรียนนานชาติเวลล์ส ได้โอกาสไปฟังงานสัมภาษณ์ของคุณชาติ บรรยากาศในงานนั้นเต็มไปด้วยความอบอุ่น เนื่องจากนักเขียนพูดเกี่ยวกับหนังสือต่างๆ ของเขาโดยไม่ถือตัว เเต่ที่เราได้เน้นในการสนทนามากสุดคือเรื่อง ‘คำพิพากษา’ ที่ได้รับรางวัลซีไรต์ ประจำปี พ.ศ. 2525 เรื่องคำพิพากษาจะเกี่ยวกับผู้ชายคนหนึ่งชื่อว่า ‘ฟัก’ ที่ถูกพิพากษาจากคนในตำบลของเขาหลังจากพ่อเขาเสียชีวิตไป ว่าเขามีความสัมพันธ์กับเมียของพ่อเขาที่ชื่อว่า ‘สมทรง’ เรื่องทั้งหมดเป็นความเข้าใจผิด นิยายเรื่องนี้จึงมีน้ำเสียงเอกลักษณ์ของผู้เขียนอยู่
งานสัมภาษณ์ครั้งนี้เป็นที่น่าสนใจจริงๆ เมื่อนักเรียนวิชาภาษาไทยหลายคนกำลังเรียนเรื่อง คำพิพากษา อยู่ พวกเขาได้พบกับนักเขียนด้วย คุณชาติ ได้กล่าวไว้ว่าเเรงบัลดาลใจของเรื่องคำพิพากษามาจากประสบการณ์ชีวิตประจำวันของเขาเอง เขาเองก็เคยพิพากษาคนอื่นเหมือนกับคนอื่นในสังคม เขาจึงเขียนเรื่องนี้เพื่อเเสดงให้เห็นว่า “เราไม่ควรที่จะตัตสินคนจากเปลือกภายนอก”
หลังจากงานสัมภาษณ์จบลงเเล้ว ชาติ กอบจิตติได้ฝากคำพูดให้เราว่า “คนไทยควรที่จะฟังข่าวการเมื่อง มากขึ้น เพราะไม่อย่างงั้นคุณจะตกเป็นคนที่ถูกเอาเปรียบ”
