“Have I gone mad?”
“I’m afraid so, you’re completely bonkers.
But I’ll tell you a secret, all the best people are.”
Wonderland is a play that was performed and produced by the KIS drama club, performed after school on the 29th and 30th of March. It was inspired by the story Alice in Wonderland, a classic story. The KIS drama club rehearsed the play for most of the school year, and they put a lot of effort and commitment into making it successful.
One of the best parts of watching the play was seeing every character come to life. The characters in the play were brought to life by each individual actor/actress. We completely thought that they were the character in the play, and each individual had unique and interesting traits that were completely different from each other. From Alice to the Red Queen, everyone took their character and made it their own.
Some of the things we noticed about the characters was that when we saw the Red Queen, the we first noticed her hair, a large mass of bright red curls, similar to her booming and commanding voice, which startled most everyone when she screamed, “Off with their heads!”. It was also interesting to see that Alice seemed to be given a new makeover as a goth like Alice, with a black dress paired with combat boots and black painted lips. Dee Dee was a cheerful, bubbly character, who made us smile since her happiness was contagious. The Chesire Cat was an ominous, malevolent character with florescent green nails and smile, who added a creepy feeling to the play. But the character that really made it’s mark was Tate, as Dodo, dressed in feathers and sequins, dancing in a pair of high heels.
Some of the characters in the play had such strong personalities that when they were in a scene, the entire atmosphere of that scene changed. Wonderland had many scenes which made us laugh, feel on edge, and wonder what would happen next.
If you were one of the lucky ones who attended the performance we’re sure you have your own accolades to offer.
Wonderland synopsis
Wonderland was created by Alice’s mind. She was sent into a world where she knew nothing and had to battle the creations of her nightmare. In Wonderland she met different characters and most of them expected her to end the life of the Red Queen. The characters all seemed slightly mad to Alice, and she struggled to understand what they wanted her to do, and why she was even in Wonderland. Alice had a difficult time figuring out her role, but when her friend, the Mad Hatter, was captured by the Red Queen, Alice knew she had to do everything to save him. Which was not an easy thing to do. Near the end of the journey, everyone Alice had encountered along the way gathered at the palace to see Alice end the Red Queen’s life. We were expecting her to actually kill the Red Queen but what Alice actually did surprised everyone in the audience. What a plot twist!
Wonderland was phenomenal and gave a new interpretation of the traditional Alice in Wonderland with it’s darker themes, but it also kept the much-loved characters that the story is known for.
We are looking forward to seeing more amazing plays from the Drama Club in the future. Who knows what they will have in store for us next year.
